Ableism:


The pervasive system of discrimination and exclusion that oppresses people who have mental, emotional and physical disabilities.






Activism:


LGBTQIA Activism is the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning or advocacy to bring about political or social change.






Act Up:


The acronym for AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, an activist organization with independent chapters in various cities. ACT UP is acceptable in first reference with the full name in a subsequent reference.





Advocacy:


Public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy.  The ACA defines Advocacy as the promotion of the well-being of individuals and groups, and the counseling profession within systems and organizations. Advocacy seeks to remove barriers and obstacles that inhibit access, growth, and development (social change, advocacy, and leadership).




Affirming:


LGBT-Affirming - to assert strongly and publicly.  Declare one’s support for, uphold, defend, accept and/or confirm the validity of LGBT identities.





Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS):


A syndrome characterized by a variety of disorders and pathological findings (such as low helper T-cell (T4) count, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and Kaposi’s sarcoma) associated with an advanced stage of HIV infection. The immune system is weakened, thus allowing for the spread of unusual microorganisms normally controlled by the immune system (opportunistic infections).




Agendered:


Person is internally ungendered.






Ageism:


Any attitude, action, or institutional structure which subordinates a person or group because of age or any assignment of roles in society purely on the basis of age (Traxler, 1980, p.4).





Aging:


LGBT Aging - the process of growing old.  Growing old, elderly, reaching the end of life.






Ally:


Someone who confronts heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, heterosexual and genderstraight privilege in themselves and others; a concern for the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and intersex people; and a belief that heterosexism, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are social justice issues.




Androgyne:


Person appearing and/or identifying as neither man nor woman, presenting a gender either mixed or neutral.






Asexual:


Person who is not sexually attracted to anyone or does not have a sexual orientation.






Assault / Abuse:


LGBT Assault - threaten physical harm, or to make a physical attack on a sexual or gender minority based on prejudice.  Abuse - treat with cruelty or violence, regularly, or repeatedly.  Also known as Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) or Domestic Violence (DV).





Autogynephilia


A form of sexual response in biological males characterized by sexual arousal over the idea of being or becoming female.






Aversion Therapy (aka Conversion Therapy or Reparative Therapy)


Unethical practice when used for sexual or gender identities.  Any number of different behavior modification techniques, largely relying on operant conditioning, to diminish a behavior (for example, homoerotic arousal) by associating it with discomfort. This might be electrical shock, drug induced nausea, or an unpleasant thought.
